Commission houses and funds led the charge lower, as they continued to roll spot positions into the deferreds ahead of Ocotber's expiry at the end of this month. Outright selling of October was cited as well. The initial slide took March through nearby support at 11.96-11.95, dragging the benchmark contract to 11.83 cents a lb, its lowest level in a month. But scale-down trade buying offset the selling momentum, enabling a partial rebound by midday. October futures fell 0.10 cent on the day, to 11.40, trading from 11.54 to 11.36. March yielded 0.08, to 11.93, driving its premium to the spot month out to 0.53 cent, from 0.51 on Tuesday. Traders said a steady decline in the London white sugar market over the past few days finally caught up with New York Wednesday. "You can only have London and New York going in opposite directions for so long. At some point it reconciles itself," a trader said. London's October contract, which expires next Monday, fell $1.80 per tonne to $318.80 Wednesday. On the charts, March had a strong band of support at 11.55-11.60 cents. The contract's lifetime high of 12.19 remained a key objective. While today's move lower could signal the beginning of a breakout from the market's recent tight range, traders said there was little chance of a significant move in either direction until New York's October options expiry on Friday.
