Scale-down buying by the trade kept prices from falling to support, amid light commission house selling. Local short-covering buoyed prices over unchanged but a lack of follow-through buying promted the funds to emerge late in the session, floor sources said. The nearby October/March switch ended at 0.45, compared with 0.39 cent on Thursday. "We saw light liquidation early, short-covering at the lows, no follow-through and the market sold off late as October/March weakened," a trader said. The most-active October contract finished 0.07 cent lower at 11.54 cents a lb, having ranged from 11.62 to 11.54 cents. March finished down 0.01 cent at 11.99, and the rest of the board went out 0.03 lower to 0.03 cent firmer. On the charts, March should run into resistance around 12.15 cents. Support was pegged at 11.96 cents. An estimated 17,388 lots changed hands on the day, compared with Thursday's official 13,213 lots. 081228 MET sep 97
