Fund buying lifted the most-active October contract to a high of 12.00 cents, where producer selling blocked further gains. The contract dipped slightly below unchanged and to a low of 11.78 cents, drifted within its range and closed up on the day. The October contract ended 0.02 cent higher at 11.84 cents a lb, while the rest of the board finished 0.03 to 0.08 cent firmer. All of the deferred contracts hit new contract highs during the day. Analysts said the October contract could make a run for key 12.00 cents on Wednesday but will find firm resistance by producers on a scale-up basis. The longer-term trend remains higher based on the global supply and demand situation, analysts said. Players will monitor sugarcane crops in Southeast Asia over the winter, which could suffer under dry, El Nino conditions. An estimated 27,302 lots changed hands on the day compared with Monday's official 17,305 lots. Market sources said a strike by Colombian truck drivers in the Pacific port of Buenaventura, which may have blocked some sugar exports, did not influence today's price movement.
