The spot month climbed to the day's high of 11.55 cents amid short-covering and then eased slightly by the close. Analysts said today's gains were anticipated in the wake of last week's losses. On Thursday, speculative buying fueled October to the recent high of 11.87 before the contract fell to the recent low of 11.32 cents on Friday. "The specs bailed out on Friday and the open interest reflects that," said Merrill Lynch analyst Judith Ganes, pointing to a 8,677 lot loss in open interest in October. Open interest in the October contract stood at 105,088 lots as of Friday. The October contract settled 0.15 cent higher at 11.53 cents a lb, having ranged from 11.55 to 11.37 cents. The rest of the board ended 0.10 to 0.16 cent firmer. Volume was thin at an estimated 12,678 lots compred with Friday's official 41,558 lots. The longer-term trend remains higher, analysts said, but added that a dearth of substantial physical offtake could weigh on prices. Resistance was pegged at the recent high of 11.87 cents followed by 12.00 cents. Support was seen at the recent low of 11.32 cents. 121031 MET aug 97
