"This was a technical response to the fact that the market was overbought," said Refco analyst Ann Prendergast, noting that the RSI stood at 70 after Tuesday's close. The benchmark October contract ended down 0.10 cent at 10.49 cents a lb, having ranged from 11.58 to 11.45 cents. The rest of the board finished unchanged to 0.06 cent weaker. Dealers said prices should continue to ease on Thursday and pegged support at the previous contract high of 11.40 cents. A move under that level could trigger sell stops and pressure the contract to its next downside target of 11.30 cents, they said. A push above resistance at Tuesday's high of 11.65 cents in October would attract further fund buying and carry the market sharply higher. Producer scale-up selling is likely to provide resistance at each point up, analysts said, since recent gains were driven by technical factors. A lack of physical offtake coupled with extremely high open interest levels make the market vulnerable to a selloff. Open interest in the October contract stood at 105,870 lots, up 13,763 lots as of Tuesday. Open interest in March rose by 2,601 lots to stand at 52,010 lots.
