The market set its eight-point range early and then drifted for the remainder of the session. Most of the day's estimated volume of 20,482 lots was attributed to activity in the July/October switch, dealers said. Trade buying in July supported the contract at 11.30 cents but producer selling capped gains. Resistance in most-active October was pegged at 11.35 cents. "The speculators are taking their time and rolling out of July and into October, and the trade is buying at each point down," a dealer said. "It is a very orderly expiry." The July contract expires on June 30, and open interest in the spot month remains high. As of early Wednesday, open interest stood at 47,914 lots. With prices remaining firm, the speculators are expected to roll July long positions into October, potentially lifting open interest in the second month to more than 100,000 lots. Open interest in October stood at 86,452 lots as of early Wednesday. "If October gets over 100,000 lots, we have to look for a shake-out, even if the fundamentals are good," a trader said. The July contract closed up 0.01 at 11.37 cents per lb, traded 11.38 to 11.30 cents. Most-active October settled 0.02 cent firmer at 11.33 cents, while the rest of the board closed 0.01 and 0.02 cent higher. The spread closed at 0.04 from 0.05 cent on Wednesday.
