Benchmark September arabicas rose 4.30 cents per lb on the day, to 179.85, after ranging from 181.00 to a new eight-week low of 168.75. Spot July finished 5.85 cents higher, at 195.90, while the outer months closed up 4.20 to 6.00. The July/September switch widened to 16.05 cents at the close, from 14.50 cents on Wednesday. Coffee prices eased at the opening, as speculators and locals followed through on Wednesday's sharply lower close, traders said. They said local participation on both sides of the market kept prices seesawing during most of the session. Traders said much of the day's focus centered on adjusting positions ahead of spot July's month-long delivery period scheduled to begin Friday. As of Wednesday, July open interest stood at 2,638 lots, down 1,216 lots from the previous session. Meanwhile, CSCE certified coffee stocks stood at 47,286 60-kg bags as of June 17 -- or the equivalent of some 168 lots. There were another 1,500 bags pending grading, the exchange reported. With little new fundamental input, traders said much of today's activity was driven by the charts. Some traders said that, technically, the market had been due for a bounce after sinking to eight-week lows on Wednesday. Since the July contract peaked at a 20-year high of 318.00 cents in late May, prices have tumbled nearly 40 percent. 201043 MET jun 97
