Prices recovered from early losses amid refiner buying in the July/October spread, and short-covering in the most-active October contract. The buying triggered stops at 11.32 cents in in October, sending the contract to the the day's high of 11.35 cents. The market drifted within its range set early in the day. Dealers said most of the session's estimated 18,221 lots traded hands by midsession. Tuesday's official volume was 26,664 lots. The spot July contract ended up 0.02 cent at 11.36 cents per lb, having ranged from 11.41 to 11.29 cents. Most-active October settled 0.05 cent at 11.31 cents, while the rest of the board closed 0.02 cent higher. The July/October spread narrowed to 0.05 cent from 0.07 cent on Tuesday. Despite today's gains, dealers expect prices to ease gradually ahead of the expiry of July, on June 30. As of early Tuesday, open interest in the spot month fell 4,912 lots but remained high at 53,176 lots, with the speculators believed to be holding a heavy net long position. 191012 MET jun 97
