Scale-down buying by the trade limited losses at 11.35 cents a lb for July delivery, while speculative selling capped gains at 10.43 cents. The market set its eight-point range early and then drifted quietly for the remainder of the day. Traders expect this sideways to lower trading pattern to persist ahead of the expiry of spot July on June 30. A lack of physical offtake should contribute to the dull tone, they said. The spot July contract closed 0.06 cent lower at 11.36 cents, with most-active October off 0.04 cent at 11.28 cents while the outer months settled 0.05 to 0.01 cent weaker. The July/October spread narrowed to 0.08 cent from 0.10 cent on Friday. Volume was estimated at 20,766 lots compared to Friday's official 29,028 lots. Open interest in July remains heavy with less than two weeks before expiry. Non-commercial long are believed to represent a hefty proportion of the 62,333 lots of open interest remaining on the July contract as of early Friday, dealers said. 181210 MET jun 97
