Benchmark September arabicas closed 9.10 cents per lb higher, at 190.70, after ranging from 194.00 to 181.60. Spot July jumped 12.20 cents, to 208.70, while the back months rose 6.20 to 8.50. The July/September switch widened to 18.00 cents at the close, from 14.90 cents on Monday. Arabica prices rose at the outset, defying pre-opening expectations, after a smaller-than-expected increase in U.S. consumer coffee stocks in May prompted commission house buying, traders said. The Green Coffee Association of New York reported after the close on Monday stocks of green coffee stored in U.S. warehouse increased in May by 122,000 60-kg bags, to 1,977,000 bags.
