The market fell to the lows early as speculators sold July and bought October contracts. Trade buying emerged in the spreads to support the most-active October contract at the low of 11.18 cents. Prices drifted within its range for the remainder of the day, as trade buying of the spreads and short-covering in the October and March contracts was matched by producer scale-up selling, floor soruces said. Spot July ended down 0.02 cent at 11.34 cents per lb, having ranged from 11.40 to 11.26 cents. Most-active October finished 0.02 cent lower at 11.26 cents, while the outer months went out 0.04 to 0.02 higher. The July/October spread closed at 0.07 cent compared with 0.08 cent on Monday. While the trade is expected to cover short positions in the near term, the speculators will continue to liquidate July long positions, pushing the spot month closer to 11.00 cents and July/October spread to around 0.05 cent. "The specs have to get out while some of the shorts are against physical sugar and can make delivery," a dealer said. The speculators maintain a sizable long position in July with just eight trading days before June 30, when the contract expires. As of early Monday, open interest stood at 58,088 lots, down 4,245 lots from the previous session. "The stronger hands in this market are the specs," who have remained mostly long for the past year and a half," a trader said. "That position appears been profitable, and this expiry is no exception." 181003 MET jun 97
