Spurred by signs of solid trade buying underneath, commodity funds bid the market to new contract highs early in the day. Producer price-fixing selling quickly took the steam out of the rally, however, and persistent speculative selling on the spot contract pushed the market back below unchanged, dealers said. Benchmark October ended off 0.02 cent at 11.32 cents a lb after trading from 11.22 to 11.40, a life-of-contract high. Spot July closed down 0.07 at 11.42, with trades posted from 11.32 to 11.51. The July-October switch shrunk to 0.10 cent by the close, from 0.15 on Thursday. An estimated 32,219 lots changed hands on the day. With today's July options expiry now out of the way, traders said the focus would turn to the July futures contract, which goes off the boards at the end of the month. "With 11 days remaining, we should start to see the liquidation on July pick up," said one broker. Non-commercial long were thought to represent a hefty proportion of the 71,116 lots of open interest remaining on the July contract. 161033 MET jun 97
