After a rally on Monday propelled the market to its highest level in five weeks, nearby July and October were the focus of intense fund buying from the outset today. Traders said signs of steady offtake in the physical market, especially by Russia, also aided sentiment. The market chugged higher from the open, quickly pushing through the previous day's high of 11.38 for July delivery. A short round of profit-taking pared some of the gains, but buyers returned in force ahead of the close. Producer-linked selling was noted into the rally, but origins sales appeared to wane later on as July eclipsed the widely-watched 11.50 mark. Benchmark July ended up 0.14 cent at 11.48 cents a lb, beneath a session high of 11.54. October gained 0.10 to close at 11.29, while the outer months were up 0.06 cent. An estimated 37,759 lots were exchanged on the day, including nearly 2,000 against actuals, traders said. Traders said the market's steady climb since mid-May, along with rising liquidity, continued to attract new buyers. But some cautioned that the market looked increasingly overbought and may be due for a technical correction in the next few sessions. "The specs keep buying it, and the technicals have been improving on a steady basis. The question is how much more can they buy?" said one trader. Open interest on New York raws hit 166,579 lots as of June 2, up 5,764 lots on the day. To continue the uptrend, July would need to challenge resistance in the 11.65-11.70 range, a high from late April. Support was seen from 11.20 to 11.00 cents. 041042 MET jun 97
