The contract eased back slightly by the close, ending in its recent trading range pegged between 10.88 cents, where trade selling was noted throughout the day, and 10.73 cents, Thursday's low. Buy stops are thought to be resting between 10.95 cents and 11.00 cents basis the July contract, traders said, while a move below support is expected to trigger speculative sell stops and pressure the contract to 10.65 cents, the recent low hit on May 2. The most-active July contract closed 0.04 cent firmer at 10.88 cents per lb, having ranged from 10.89 to 10.77 cents. The rest of the board settled 0.01 higher to down 0.03. Volume was estimated at 9,237 lots, compared with Thursday's official 5,958 lots. Early speculative buying carried July to a high of 10.88 cents, where a lack of follow-through to the upside and light trade selling, knocked the contract below unchanged. July drifted on both sides of unchanged until the close, when commission house short-covering carried the contract to the high. Buying in July/March around 0.23 cent, and in July/May at a 0.27 cent, was also reported. Open interest in July rose by 100 lots to 73,579 lots, as of early Thursday. The International Sugar Organization said world raw sugar prices should hold between 10.00 cents and 12.00 cents per lb through the end of the current October/September cycle. In the near term, prices could remain under pressure based on the fundamental outlook, the organization said. World output should fall to 123.49 million tonnes raw value in 1996/97, from 124.19 million tonnes last year. The world sugar surplus was estimated at 2.29 million tonnes, down sharply from 5.54 million tonnes in the previous crop year, ISO said. 121201 MET may 97
