CSCE coffee ends down sharply as May slides
NEW YORK, May 19 (Reuter) - CSCE coffee futures pulled
back sharply Monday, led by a massive slide in the May
contract as operators rushed to liquidate long positions ahead
of the spot contract's expiry at noon EDT.
With only a half day of trading and open interest at 120
lots coming into today's session, dealers moved quickly to
unload May arabicas. May ended 21.25 cents lower at 255.25
cents a lb, dragging down the rest of the board with it.
"Liquidation on May instantly brought the rest down," one
trader said. "The sell-off was in sympathy with May."
Benchmark July settled down 6.90 cents at 246.25 cents
after ranging from 257.00 and 243.25 cents. The outer months
finished 1.00 to 6.35 cents lower.
Coffee jumped 2.00 cents at the outset on the heels of a
rally on the London robusta market overnight. But New York
futures failed to make their 5.00-cent higher preopening call,
and locals and commission houses began to sell, traders said.
Downward momentum picked up after the July contract slid
below 252.00 cents, activating sell orders and pushing the
active down nearly 10 cents at one point, before bottom pickers
emerged, they said.
Some traders said today's downturn may have been aided by
talk that Association of Coffee Producing Countries (ACPC)
would discuss at a London meeting this week suspending export
quotas in order to cool coffee futures' blistering four-month
rally.
At a preparatory session of the ACPC six-member technical
group, a draft proposal for a full session on Wednesday would
have the group retain export quotas but include new
flexibility on allocating them, delegates said.
"There's a concern that as the market approaches $3.00 you
start to impact consumption," said Dean Witter analyst Steve
Platt. "And producers don't want to shut off consumption."
Platt said news that Colombia's National Coffee Growers'
Federation has decided to reopen private exporters' May/June
coffee registrations also may have weighed on the market.
"Reopening privates' registrations may have brought out
some producer selling," he noted.
A statement released Friday afternoon by the National
Coffee Exporters' Association of Colombia (Asoexport) said
registrations for the shipment of up to 500,000 60-kg bags of
coffee to Europe and Japan in May and June, would be opened to
private exporters next week.
In other news, leading U.S. roaster Folgers announced it
will raise the list price on its standard 13-ounce can of
ground regular and ground decaffeinated coffeess by 30 cents
due to higher prices of green coffee on the world's futures
markets.
The increase, which is to take effect immediately, brings
the price for a standard can of regular coffee to $3.36, and
decaffeinated ground Folgers up to $4.06, the company said.
Volume was light at an estimated 6,658 lots, traders said.
