Benchmark July peaked at a lifetime high of 248.50 cents per lb, before settling at 240.60 cents, down 0.55 cent on the day. Spot May rose 0.50 cent, to 261.50, but well short of its new high of 270.00. The back months closed 0.30 to 6.00 higher. The market charged higher at the opening, quickly driving the board to new highs, as panicky speculators followed through on this week's steep run-up. But the rally ran out of steam and speculators to turned around and took profits. "It was just a profit-taking day," said Stephen Smith, president of South Futures in Miami. "But the trend is clearly up and people are very scared to sell it." Smith said the market may have taken a slight breather today ahead of the Green Coffee Association of New York's monthly stock report. The stock data, slated for release on Thursday at 1500 EDT, is expected by some traders to show a stock build of some 100,000 60-kg bags in April. However, estimates have ranged broadly from a slight decrease to a 250,000 to 300,000-bag increase. Last month, GCA reported stocks of coffee stored in U.S. warehouses rose by 111,000 bags in March, to 1,657,000 bags. In April 1996, however, stocks fell by 76,000 bags, to 2,296,000 bags, the GCA said. Despite today's weakness, the active July contract has gained 22.70 cents -- or about 10 percent -- this week as supply worries continue to plague the market. Smaller-than-expected crops in many Latin American coountries -- most notably second-largest producer Colombia -- and low inventory levels in consuming countries have helped fuel coffee futures' steep five-month upswing. According to official figures made available Wednesday by Colombia's National Coffee Growers' Federation, the country produced 2.7 million 60-kg bags of coffee between January and April against 3.7 million bags in the same period last year. The figures came a day after the federation's general manager, Jorge Cardenas, told reporters the federation was having "enormous difficulties" meeting its export commitments because of unusually tight supply. Although some dealers said the market is due for a technical retracement, others said the onset of winter in top-grower Brazil was likely to keep prices well underpinned for the time being. After Wednesday's close, the CSCE reported certified coffee stocks continued to climb. Stocks increased by 2,375 bags, to 35,412 bags as of May 11. There were 15,790 bags of coffee pending grading, the exchange said. Volume reached an estimated 11,884 lots on the day. 151033 MET may 97
