"It has been a bull market for some time and the fundamentals remain the same," said Prudential Securities analyst Arthur Stevenson. "They include low stocks here in the U.S., a question market hanging over Colombian production and export capacity, and the well sold positions of other producers such as Costa Rica." Benchmark July leapt to a lifetime high of 243.00 cents per lb, before settling at 241.15 cents, up 11.50 cents on the day. Spot May surged 15.35 cents,to end at its new high of 261.00, while the back months closed 5.50 to 10.75 higher. Coffee prices headed higher at the outset, defying pre-opening expectations, as a bout of commission house buying triggered a succession of buy orders, traders said. They said long-term weather outlooks calling for a cool airmass to push across Argentina and into Brazil in eight to ten days contributed to today's bullish tone. However, forecasters said the chance of damaging frost was extremely slim, with the earliest deep freeze in Brazil recorded on May 30-31. "There is little or no opportunity to produce damaging cold," said Weather Services Corp. senior meterologist Mike Palmerino. "It's too early and so far out, it's not valid." But with inventories near 20-year lows, traders said any sign of cool weather in top-grower Brazil was likely to spark buying. Two severe frosts in 1994, one in late June and another in early July, cut Brazil's 1995/96 crop by some 50 percent and sent futures prices to near 10-year highs. "It's the first time we're seeing cold weather mentioned," said one trader. "And it's a wake-up call." In the two sessions this week, the active July contract has rallied 23.25 cents -- or nearly 11 percent. Traders said bullish sentiment was ignited by a report from brokerage Merrill Lynch, which said coffee prices could reach record highs ahead of new crop shipments this autumn due to ongoing supply tightness. Although Merrill Lynch did not specify a price, the highest price on CSCE was 340.70 cents a lb set April 14, 1977. While the market may pull back in a technical correction, traders expect low inventory levels and uncertainty ahead of the Brazilian winter to keep prices well underpinned. After Tuesday's close, the CSCE reported certified coffee stocks continued to climb. Stocks increased by 1,745 bags, to 33,037 bags as of May 10. There were 16,435 bags of coffee pending grading, the exchange said. Traders await the monthly Green Coffee Association of New York stock report slated for release on Thursday at 1500 EDT. While some traders said stocks could fall or only be up marginally in April, other traders are forecasting a 250,000 to 300,000-bag increase. One trader expected the Port of New Orleans to post the biggest increase in stocks, with heavy shipments of robusta coffee from Vietnam and Thailand accounting for the build up. Volume reached an estimated 11,300 lots on the day. 141035 MET may 97
