Dealers said thin volume coupled with steady selling from all sides of the market limited gains. Trade buying in the July/October spread and commission house buying in July, carried prices to the highs, they said. The spot month is expected to pierce resistance on Wednesday and close the gap lingering between 10.86 cents and 10.92 cents, despite sell stops resting overhead. Producer scale-up selling could send the July contract back to support, cited at 10.88 cents, followed by 10.72 and 10.65 cents basis July. Fundamentally, players continue to await news on the more than 360,000-tonne delivery taken by Cargill. "Everybody is wondering, do we have this sugar weighing on the market or is there a destination," Tony Passimenti, a broker with Merrill Lynch, said. July ended 0.09 cent firmer at 10.88 cents per lb, having ranged from 10.88 to 10.76 cents. The outer months settled 0.06 higher to 0.01 cent weaker.
