Most-active July closed 0.10 firmer at 10.80 cents per lb, having ranged from 10.82 to 10.65 cents. The rest of the board settled 0.07 higher to 0.02 weaker. Volume was estimated at 26,082 lots compared with Thursday's official 39,874 lots. Early losses were blamed on follow-through speculative liquidation in July, which pressured the front month to 10.65 cents, its lowest level since hitting 10.58 cents on April 1. The trade was cited on both sides of the market in July in early trade, but became a steady scale-down buyer as prices slid to new lows, dealers said. The move down failed to trigger stops, forcing players who had anticipated another selloff to buy back short positions. Short-covering lifted July to the day's high of 10.82 cents just before the close. The market still fell short of a gap on the charts between 10.86 cents, Thursday's open, and 10.92 cents, Wednesday's low basis July. Analysts said the gap will provide formidable resistance as producers should to sell into rallies. Today's close was viewed as positive by traders, who said July could correct to 10.90 to 11.00 cents. "Any time there is a sharp decline like this it is not unusual to see a little recovery," a dealer said. "But it will be brief and ultimately, there is no question the market is going lower." He said the speculators retain a huge net long position in front-month July, citing open interest of 82,412 lots as of early Thursday. In other news, the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) issued a final rule requiring clearing members and foreign brokers to file options large trader reports daily. The changes include a joint options and futures reporting level, a new record format for reporting information in machine-readable form, and an early time for sugmission data. The rules are set to begin on Oct. 1, CFTC said. Cuban President Fidel Castro said the Cuban sugar harvest could fall short of last year's harvest due to a hurricane and a tightening of the U.S. economic embargo, which delayed the arrival of essential sugar harvest financing and inputs. Castro did not provide an estimate of this year's harvest. Cuban sugar production reached 4.45 million tonnes in 1995/96. 051123 MET may 97
