Market sources said Friday's May options expiry will keep the spot month close to 11.00 cents a lb for the remainder of the week, citing high open interest in the May 11.00 calls. As of Friday, open interest was 7,635 lots. Floor sources cited some light shortcovering by the trade in the May/July spread, which closed at 0.04 compared to 0.06 on Friday. Selling by Far Eastern producers was cited above 11.00 cents. May closed at 11.00 cents, having ranged from 11.03 to 10.95 cents. Deferreds settled 0.02 higher to 0.01 weaker. Volume was estimated at 10,130 lots compared with Friday's official 12,453 lots. Open interest in May rose 194 lots to 60,779 lots, as of Friday's close. The last trading day for the contract is April 30. Support remained at the recent low of 10.78 cents in May. The sugar freight market saw several fresh inquires today, with Cuba, Mexico and Thailand in demand as origins, shipbrokers said. 081016 MET apr 97
