Soft oils were marked down by as much as two guilders following the sharply lower close in Chicago on Wednesday on news that a U.S. firm had purchased 45,000 tonnes of soybeans from Brazil, and that the Philippines had passed at a tender for U.S. soybean because they were too expensive. However, traders said the fall could be short-lived and after a period of consolidation they expected a further rally. But after a lower opening Chicago futures rallied only to fall back again on news that other U.S. firms may buy Brazilian soybeans. "We had hoped that after the funds bailed out on Wednesday things would settle down for a while, but it seems it's not about to happen," said a trader. Palm oil was mixed with most players awaiting PORLA's end-February output, stocks and exports data report due out on Saturday. "Most people are waiting for the PORLA report, because there is a feeling that Malaysian output may not have recovered as quickly as first thought after the long local holiday during the first half of February," said a trader. Malaysian plantation houses estimate that production will be down between 10 and 15 percent from January. Ivan Wong in his last crop report pegged output at 502,000 tonnes, 13 percent down against an earlier estimate of a 21 percent drop. At the close Dutch soy oil was 1.50 guilders down after May/Jul traded at 104.50 guilders. Rape oil was 1.50 to two guilders down after Nov/Jan traded at 104.75 and 104.25 guilders a 100 kilos fob ex-mill. Traders said the market had been active in the sense that there had been a lot of interest, but owing to the volatile trading in the U.S. little business was done. Crude palm oil closed unchanged to $2.50 down after Apr traded at $557.50 a tonne cif during the afternoon. Products closed $2.50 up to $2.50 down with no further business reported. Among lauric oils coconut oil finished $2.50 down to unchanged after Mar/Apr traded at $740 and Apr/May at $732.50 and $735 a tonne cif. Palmkernel oil was mixed at $2.50 to $2.50 down in a tradeless market. Informacije: Zoran Popijač telefon: 01/273-927 fax: 01/4550-148 140954 MET mar 97
