The spread ended at 0.10 cent Wednesday. Floor sources said technical buy signals and concern over near-term supplies sparked follow-through buying. Supply concerns could continue to support the March contract ahead of its expiry in just over a week, they said, as the back months continue to weaken. The last trading day for the contract is Friday March 28. Open interest in the May contract rose by a hefty 9,568 lots to 52,899 lots after the previous close. Open interest in March fell 4,032 lots to 32,349 lots, indicating that the speculators have covered short positions and are now net long, Merrill Lynch analyst Judith Ganes said. Resistance in March was pegged at 11.55 cents. Most-active May closed 0.01 cent firmer at 11.16 cents, having ranged from 11.19 to 11.01. Spot March settled up 0.08 cent at 11.33. The deferred contracts finished 0.07 higher to down 0.01. Volume was estimated at 53,205 lots compared with Wednesday's official volume of 61,766 lots. The March/May spread is expected to grow Friday on ongoing fears of tight supplies. Feeding concerns was an announcement early in the week that Brazil would suspend 500,000 tonnes of extra sugar exports. Brazil will not ship more than its set 5.2 million tonnes in 1996/97 due to low international prices in relation to prices in Brazil, Mauricio Assis, head of Brazil's primary commodities department, said Tuesday. 211010 MET feb 97
