Early trade buying carried the most-active March contract through key-psychological resistance at 11.00 cents. The move over resistance triggered buying by the locals, who were probing for stops at 11.05. Once the contract pierced firmer resistance at 11.05 cents, fund buying emerged and carried the contract to the day's high of 11.12 cents in March. "It is a very bullish close," a broker said. The contract closed at 11.27 on Sept 23. Dealers said steady trade scale-up selling limited gains. The most-active March contract rose 0.14 cent on the day to 11.08, traded 11.12 to 10.92. The back months finished 0.13 to 0.02 higher. Volume was estimated at a hefty 27,114 lots. Solid fund-driven buying drove the market higher early in the day, but the uptrend faltered when nearby March futures failed to clear the previous high of 11.12 cents. As the buying momentum fizzled, producers and the trade sold the market back toward unchanged, where it drifted for the remainder of the session. "Fund buying pushed it up to the highs, but it couldn't break through last Friday's high," a trader said. Front-month March eased 0.01 cent per lb on the day, to 11.07 cents, trading from 11.00 to 11.11. May climbed 0.03, to 11.10, while the outer months rose 0.02 to 0.04. March's slight premium was well supported early in the day, but the contract slipped into backwardation against May as day traders liquidated long positions. On the charts, traders noted March's failure to set a new peak after climbing on Friday to 10-week highs, but the tone would remain fairly stable while March held above 10.98 cents, they said. On the physical front, fresh developments were scarce, dealers said, with operations slow to resume after the Christmas and New Year's holidays.
