Traders said it was difficult to create a reliable market picture with many players absent ahead of the New Year holiday and no more prices would be issued on Tuesday. The market reopens after the New Year break on January 2, 1997. Higher Malaysian palm oil prices had little impact in Europe with crude palm oil unchanged and refined oils unchanged to $2.50 up in tradeless markets. Prices in Malaysia were supported by export data from two local cargo surveyors. Cargo surveyor Societe Genetale de Surveillance (SGS) put Malaysian palm oil exports during December at 717,197 tonnes against 700,566 tonnes in November while Caleb Brett put exports at 702,082 tonnes against its estimate of 673,905 for November. Lauric oils were unchanged. Among soft oils soy oil was 0.50 to one guilders down and rape oil 0.25 guilders lower to unchanged in tradeless markets. Based on sellers' prices rape oil's premium over soy oil was three to 3.50 guilders against two to 3.25 guilders at Monday's close.
