The market lingered in negative territory for most of the morning, weighed down by a surprisingly small speculative short position that was revealed in the latest CFTC Commitments of Traders data. But the selling pressure intensified late in the day as the key March position fell through last week's low of 10.53 cents a lb. Speculators were net short 1,499 lots (non-commercial plus non-reportable) through Feb 10, according to CFTC data released after the close of business on Friday. U.S. financial market were closed Monday in observance of Presidents Day. The speculative tally was far less than most traders had anticipated and quickly dashed bulls' hopes that a short-covering rally could be in the works. "The funds's net position is nothing, so they certainly have room to sell more," one trader said. He looked for the market to work its way lower still on Wednesday before establishing a base. Bellwether May futures fell 0.24 cent on the day to close at 10.48 cents. The contract ended in the low end of the day's 10.73 to 10.46 cent range. Nearby March, which goes off the boards at the end of this month, fell 0.25 to 10.75, while the back months ended down 0.21 to 0.13 cent. An estimated 32,890 lots changed hands on the day. On the charts, the May contract would need to hold above the recent low of 10.33 cents to ward off a fresh round of fund liquidation, traders said. Resistance was noted at 10.78, followed by 11.03 cents. 181124 MET feb 98
