Most-active May futures rose 0.06 cent to finish at 10.75 cents a lb, the top of the day's 0.08-cent trading range. Spot March delivery gained 0.09 to end at 10.97 cents. Dealers said a mixture of trade-house and speculative buying underpinned the market for most of the day, but producer-linked selling blocked a bid to tackle any key chart objectives. Buy stops were thought to be well-placed just above today's closing price of 10.75 cents. The nearby switches were also active as dealers sought to exit spot positions ahead of March's expiry at the end of the month. Otherwise, traders said the upcoming March options expiry could limit the market's volatility over the next few days. Open interest remained high at the 11.00 and 11.50-cent strike prices going into today's session. "The strongest influence from now until Friday in the No. 11 contract is the options," one trader said. "The suggestion is that the 11-cent strike should be a magnet through Friday." The raw sugar market has been relatively subdued in the last few days after sliding last week to the lowest levels since spring of 1997. Ongoing concern about the financial crisis in Asia kept many buyers at bay, but some traders said the market appeared to have established a solid base this week. An estimated 19,388 lots changed hands on the day. 121457 MET feb 98
