The most-active May contract climbed 0.10 cent to 10.69 cents a lb, after spanning a narrow range between 10.65 and 10.71. Nearby March futures also rose 0.10, to 10.88 cents. Dealers said today's upturn was mainly technical in nature, as participants sought to cover short positions. Raw sugar prices have fallen sharply since the beginning of the year amid mounting concern that the economic crisis in East Asia would put a damper on consumer demand there. Buying interest was sighted from both speculators and the trade in today's advance, and the March-May switch was actively traded. Dealers said the options market remained actively traded, as participants sought to adjust positions ahead of this Friday's expiry of the March options contract. Open interest was especially large on March in-the-money puts concentrated on the 12.50-cent strike price. "From a technical point of view the market could continue to head toward 11 cents in the next few days because of the options, but the producer selling is still there at every point," one broker said. An estimated 25,438 lots changed hands on the day, including as many as 3,000 March-May switches, dealers said. 111143 MET feb 98
