Indonesian Trade Minster Tunky Ariwibowo, quoted in Bisnis Indonesia, said on Tuesday, "After I consulted with the agriculture minister, I decided that we won't allow exports for an unlimited time before the domestic supply is stable." He added the current ban which has been running since January and was due to end in March, was not long enough to stabilise domestic cooking oil prices. However, traders in Europe said the rise in prices on the local market was due to the export ban. "The Indonesian government has banned exports which is pushing up the international price and this along with currency factors is leading to higher domestic cooking oil prices," said one trader. Traders noted that again news of the ban had come via the local Indonesian press. "The Indonesians will almost never make an official announcements, which leaves people wondering just what is going on," said another trader. European traders also questioned the storage life of crude palm oil. "Indonesia produces around 500,000 tonnes of crude palm oil a month. They use 300,000 to 350,000 tonnes and the rest normally goes for export. But if they don't export it, it will have to be stored in tanks and after four to six week it will become unmarketable because the Free Fatty Acid levels will be over five percent," said one trader. At the close of business crude palm oil cif Europe was quoted $20 up while RBD palm oil was $10 to $7.50 up and olein $7.50 to $5 higher. Stearin finished the $7.50 up to $10 down. Coconut oil closed off its highs for the day with sellers $7.50 down to $2.50 up with Feb/Mar trading from $547.50 up to $550, Mar/Apr from $575 upto $580, Apr/May from $587.50 upto $590 and May/Jul between $600 and $6510 a tonne cif. Traders said most of the business was between dealers. Palmkernel oil was neglected. Among soft oils soy oil closed unchanged to 1.50 guilders up while rape oil was one to 0.75 guilders higher after May/Jul traded at 129.50 and 130, Aug/Oct at 119.25 and Nov/Jan at 120.25 guilders per 100 kilos fob ex-mill.
