"It appears that world sugar production and consumption are becoming more balanced than they were at the start of the season," Salomon Smith Barney analyst, Walter Spilka, said. "This implies that prices will likely stay range bound near term and we look for prices to spend most of their time between 11.00 and 12.00 cents." CSCE March sugar ended up 0.07 cent at 10.78 cents a pound, after trading a 10.82-10.73 cent range, inside Friday's range. CSCE world sugar volume was estimated at 20,000 lots Monday, after open interest rose 5,109 lots Friday to 221,541 contracts, as funds added to short positions. Momentum oscillators on the daily charts now look oversold, but the March contract's five-day moving-average remains well below its 20-day and 50-day moving averages, suggesting the five-week downtrend is still intact, analysts said. The 1997/98 season had begun with forecasts of the first supply/demand deficit since 1993/94, leading to a drawdown in world stocks and sugar prices climbed to six month highs near the end of 1997. "Given the recent price activity, it looks like the deficit may in fact be smaller," Spilka said. 101351 MET feb 98
