"There has been a meeting today (Friday) between Indonesian government officials and the trade and it seems as if the ban may be eased," said one trader. Traders said the ban, which came into effect on January 1 to last until the end of March to keep local cooking oil prices under control, would not be lifted for crude palm oil and olein, but they were hopeful that exports of palm stearin and palmkernel oil would soon be allowed. "They, Indonesia, seem to be saying to the trade, look we really do need the cooking oils, but we don't want to lose all the export business, so here's a start of a return to normal trading," said another trader. Whatever happens Indonesia has said that when the ban is lifted palm oil exports will be subject to a tax of up to 20 percent. "No one is getting too excited yet, we want to see it in writing, but things are looking good," said a trader. Other traders said the signs have been looking hopeful for a few days. "One company has shipped palm fatty acid distillate in the last eight days we know for sure," said one. Tropical oils were firm at the close supported by improving currencies in Asia with Ivan Wong's latest report giving palm oil a further boost. In his latest report, Malaysian private forecaster Ivan Wong estimated local exports during January at 700,000 against PORLA's 644,258 tonnes in December. Wong put January output at 512,000 tonnes, down 18 percent, while stocks were projected at 665,000 tonnes for January against PORLA's 962,490 tonnes at end-December. At the close crude palm oil cif Europe was $2.50 down to $10 up after Apr/Jun traded at $585 a tonne cif. Products closed with gains of $5 to $15 with no further business reported. Coconut oil sellers were $10 up at the close after Mar/Apr traded at $560, Apr/May at $567.50, $570, $572.50 and $575, and May/Jun at $585, $587.50 and $590 a tonne cif. In the soft oil sector soy oil was 1.50 to 2.25 guilders up after May/Jul traded at 122, 122.25 and 122.50 guilders per 100 kilo fob ex-mill. Rape oil finished two to 1.25 guilders up after Feb and Mar both traded at 128.50 guilders, Apr/Jun at 127.50 and Aug/Oct 116.25, 116.50, 116.75 and 117 guilders per 100 kilos fob ex-mill.
