The market worked its way higher at the opening as expected, but producer selling once again stopped the rally in its tracks. Disappointment over the market's continued failure to challenge the 11.40 cent level in March also encouraged some new speculative selling, traders said. "There was some March-May selling by the speculators, which attracted commission-house selling by the close," one trader said. The bellwether March contract fell 0.05 cent to 11.18 cents a lb, ending near the bottom of the day's 11.34 to 11.17 range. Second-position May fell 0.01 to 10.98, while the back months finished between 0.03 and 0.05 lower. Traders said concern that the financial crisis in Asia will hurt consumer demand there continues to weigh on the market, prompting speculators to roll spot longs into the back months ahead of the March contract's expiry. While the market appeared long overdue for a substantial technical correction, the trade has mainly limited its buying to a scale-down basis. "The market is still oversold, but it looks like it's having a lot of difficulty in trying to retrace this oversold condition that we've been in for some time now," a second trader said. "But we're building a nice base, and we've stayed above the lows from last week," he added. An estimated 17,793 lots were traded on the day. 271138 MET jan 98
