Earlier traders said the market had looked overdone following its rally over the last couple of days, but later found the market had more upside than at first thought as consumers came bargain hunting again. By the close of business Jan/Feb and Feb/Mar had gained $12.50 a tonne while forward positions were $2.50 higher. In fairly active trading Feb/Mar fetched $540, Mar/Apr $560, Apr/May $572.50 and $575 and May/Jun $590 a tonne cif. Palm oil prices eased on long liquidation ahead of the week-long holiday in Malaysia. The Chinese New Year and Moslem Eid al-Fitr festivals run back to back starting from Wednesday. Indonesia's revised budget had little impact on the market while calls for a lifting of the three-month palm oil export ban continue. "The budget is based on an exchange rate of 5,000 rupiah to the dollar which is unrealistic when you consider its recent falls," said one trader. The rupiah hit a low of 15,000 to the dollar before central bank intervention, for the second day running, dragged it up to around 13,000 to 13,500 to the dollar. At the close, crude palm oil cif Europe was unchanged to $5 down while products were $2.50 to $7.50 lower. Soft oils were featureless and drifted lower during a tradeless afternoon. Dutch soy oil finished 1.50 to 0.50 guilders lower while rape oil was one to 0.50 guilders down. Informacije: Zoran Popijač telefon: 01/273-927 fax: 01/4550-148 261136 MET jan 98
