Dealers said the session was uneventful, with prices moving sideways between technical parameters and activity dominated by day traders. "It was a lackadaisical day, a local day," said one trader. "We're still consolidating the higher move." Benchmark March arabicas ended down 0.65 cent at 176.85 cents a lb after ranging between 178.50 and 174.00 cents. Second-month May ended up 0.65 cent at 168.00 cents, with the rest of the board up 0.55 to down 1.00. The March/May switch narrowed to to 8.85 cents, compared with 10.15 cents at the close on Wednesday. Arabica futures bucked 1.50-cent lower pre-opening expectations and headed higher from the outset, buoyed by an initial round of trade buying, dealers said. But scale-up producer selling limited gains and prevented the March contract from testing chart resistance near 180 cents, prompting day traders to liquidate their long positions, they said. March fell 3.50 cents, but failed to test Wednesday's low of 173.50 cents, its technical objective on the downside. An afternoon round of local short-covering lifted prices off intra-day lows, traders said. Despite today's weak tone, some traders said the market was likely to work higher amid a positive technical and fundamental picture. "We ended off lows and the technicals still look good," said a trader. "The fundamentals haven't really changed, there's still nearby tightness and a strike coming in Colombia." On Thursday, the head of Colombia's main truckers' union vowed that "all trucks" in the main coffee-growing region would back a nationwide strike set to start Jan. 25. Javier Suarez, head of the New Association of Colombian Truck Drivers' (Nueva ACC), which claims to represent 75 percent of the country's transport drivers, said he had not been invited to any 11th hour talks with government officials and that the strike call was "firm". Colombia is the world's second largest producer of coffee after Brazil. Some traders, however, expect the March contract to stay roughly within a 170-180 cents range ahead of the Brazilian government's 1998/99 and 1997/98 coffee crop estimates slated for release on Monday, January 26. A small 1997/98 Brazilian harvest has contributed to the recent supply tightness, but projections for a large crop in the coming season are expected to put pressure on coffee futures. Preliminary estimates for the 1998/99 Brazil crop have ranged from 30 million to over 40 million bags. U.S. traders expect the Brazilian government's forecast to be toward the lower end of the range. Technically, traders continued to peg March support at 173.50, with the next level seen toward 170 cents. On the upside, resistance was seen at 180.00-180.50 cents, followed by 183 cents. After Thursday's close, CSCE reported U.S. certified coffee stocks rose 450 60-kg bags to 102,679 bags as of January 21. There were an additional 3,500 bags pending grading, the exchange said. CSCE also reported 4,500 bags were graded and 1,750 bags passed exchange approval. Volume reached an estimated 5,809 lots. 231142 MET jan 98
