Traders said speculative profit taking accounted for much of the downturn, but an afternoon round of buying led by commission houses and locals lifted prices off intraday lows. They said the market's recovery was triggered by news late Wednesday that Colombia's main truck drivers' union said its nationwide strike slated for this weekend was now "unstoppable" despite transport ministry calls for last-minute negotiations. The stoppage is set to begin at midnight EST Saturday (0500 GMT Sunday) and threatens to paralyze most road freight, including key coffee exports. "It looks like they are definitely going to have a strike," said a trader. "You've got to believe it had an impact because the story coincided with the market's recovery." Benchmark March arabicas eased 0.55 cent to end at 177.50 cents a lb after sinking to a session low of 173.50 cents. Second-month May ended 1.60 cents lower at 167.35 cents, while the rest fell 1.85 to 2.50 cents. Despite today's downturn the March/May switch, a barometer of near-term availability, continued to widen. March/May stretched to 10.15 cents, compared with 9.10 cents at the close on Tuesday. Continued jitters about the short-term supply situation pushed arabica coffee prices higher at the outset despite 3.00-cent lower pre-opening expectations. Traders said follow-through commission house buying propelled the March contract to a fresh five-week of 180.50 cents. But light overhead origin selling capped gains and prevented the March contract from making headway above the 180.50 level, they said. Prices slipped into negative territory, with downward momentum accelerating after March slipped past chart support at 175 cents, traders said. Technically, traders said the March contract's low of 173.50 cents provided a tougher downside barrier. On the upside, 180.00-180.50 cents was seen as strong resistance. Some traders said the market's ability to cut losses by the close was viewed as technically constructive. On the fundamental side, tight supplies in the near-term are likely to continue to underpin sentiment, they said. Traders await the Brazilian government's 1998/99 and 1997/98 coffee crop estimates, which were postponed to January 26 from Jan 23, officials said Wednesday. Industry and Commerce Minister Francisco Dornelles is scheduled to release official estimates for production from the 1997/98 and 1998/99 harvests at a news conference set to begin at 1730 local/1930 GMT, they said. After Wednesday's close, CSCE reported U.S. certified coffee stocks rose 1,500 60-kg bags to 102,204 bags as of Jan 20. There were an additional 4,500 bags pending grading, the exchange said. CSCE also reported 750 bags were graded and 500 bags passed exchange approval. 221124 MET jan 98
