March arabicas surged 11.00 cents on the day to a five-week high of 178.05 cents a lb after ranging between 178.50 and 168.00 cents. Second-month May ended 7.75 cents higher at 168.95 cents, while the rest of the board settled up 0.15 to 6.00 cents. The March/May switch, a barometer on near-term availability, ballooned to 9.10 cents, compared with 5.85 cents at the close on Friday. "The market rallied on both an outright and spread basis which tells me some people are concerned about supply," said Prudential Securities analyst Arthur Stevenson. "Stocks in the U.S. are very small and the latest figures showed another drawdown in December." Supplies of green coffee stored in U.S. warehouses fell in December by 87,000 60-kg bags, to 1,428,000 bags, the Green Coffee Association of New York reported last Thursday. Arabica prices defied pre-opening expectations and headed higher at the outset, bolstered by commission house and local short-covering, traders said. They said upward momentum accelerated after the March contract broke through both 171 cents and 175 to 176 cents resistance, activating buy stops. Traders said reports of a lack of nearby availability, especially from top-producer Brazil, underpinned sentiment. "Brazil had a small crop, they sold a lot of it and they're going to hold on to the balance for higher prices," said Steven Smith, president of south Futures in Miami. "And that's affecting the rest of the market." He added, "I think the supply situation is going to be fine, but at a price. Producers don't want to sell at 160." Traders also took note of news this morning from Colombia's National Coffee Growers' Federation predicting a potential 30 percent rise in incidence of the berry borer, or "broca," plague in Colombian coffee due to hot, dry weather caused by El Nino. In addition, the possibility of a nationwide strike by Colombia's main truckers' union starting Jan. 25 also was viewed as supportive. "The truckers strike is what has helped pushed this market to higher highs," said Allendale commodities analyst Jim Cordier. "And after that it was technical buying by the funds." Technically, traders and analysts said today's finish toward intra-day high could spark follow-through buying on Wednesday. They pegged March nearby resistance at 180 cents, then 183 cents. Support was seen at 175 cents. Turnover was brisk, at an estimated 13,716 lots. 211057 MET jan 98
