Bellwether March futures fell $9 a tonne to $1,538, ending toward the bottom of the day's $1,554-1,536 trading range. The deferred contracts all closed down between $8 and $10 a tonne. New York cocoa rose at the outset, aided by an upturn on sterling and a strong showing in London overnight. But the market was unable for the fourth straight day to clear the $1,559 level in March, sending prices back into negative territory. The market closed well above a key support target at $1,528, however. With port arrivals in Ivory Coast running ahead of last year's pace, buyers have had little incentive to pay up for cocoa in recent days, traders said. Estimates varied widely for the U.S. fourth-quarter cocoa grind due out early Friday, but participants said they doubted the figures would have a significant impact on prices. "I'm looking for (the grind) to be up seven to eight percent," said Prudential Securities analyst Arthur Stevenson. "But in the current market climate, I do not anticipate that the figure will generate much excitement," he added. "The market is under downside pressure and unlikely to react." An estimated 7,061 lots changed hands on the day.
