A mixture of trade and speculative buying supported prices for most of the session, at one point lifting the active March contract through the previous day's highs. But a round of selling by commodity funds pared the gains ahead of the close. "I think the market has improved slightly over the last couple of days so you don't have as much speculative selling," one trader said. "But once you bounce a little bit you run into origin selling." March futures rose 0.03 cent a lb to 11.54 cents, after trading from 11.53 to 11.60 cents. May finished up 0.04 at 11.39 cents. Traders said talk of further offtake in the physical market may have helped to spur prices higher. Some traders speculated that Russia, which reportedly picked up five cargoes of raw sugar on Monday, could be in the market for as many as seven or eight additional cargoes for late January/early February loading. Russia has been a heavy buyer of sugar over the past few months after poor weather severely depressed its domestic output. "Russia will need to buy an additional two million tonnes of sugar by June," a second trader said. Technically, March's ability to hold above yesterday's lows was seen as constructive, but dealers looked for a settlement above the 11.59-11.60 area to confirm the correction. "We've seen less volume and less selling, and I think tomorrow you will see something similar," a broker said. An estimated 16,232 lots were traded Wednesday, down from Tuesday's official total of 30,392 lots. 151043 MET jan 98
