Benchmark March futures rose 0.05 cent per lb to 11.51 cents, after trading over a narrow range from 11.48 to 11.59 cents. The market hovered in positive territory throughout the day, as industry-linked buyers emerged to pick up bargains on the heels of Monday's slide to three-and-a-half month lows. Signs of improving demand in the physical market also provided support Tuesday. Russia was widely believed to have picked up five cargoes of raw sugar, and traders said also noted buying interest from Libya and Iran. But persistent selling by commodity funds capped the gains and prevented a test of nearby chart resistance levels. "The failure of the market to push above the 11.60 level (basis March) attracted more selling," said one broker. "The funds are starting to build some short positions, though the trade did a pretty good job of supporting it late in the day." Raw sugar prices tumbled on Monday, extending a downtrend that has seen the market decline by six percent since the beginning of the year. The drop in prices came amid growing concern over the financial crisis in Asia, as traders fear the region's economic woes will undercut consumer demand for raw materials. Similarly, today's rebound coincided with a general rise in commodity futures prices. The CRB-Bridge index of commodities climbed by about 1.5 percent Tuesday, helped by a recovery in world stock markets. Technically, March sugar was expected to encounter heavy resistance at 11.72-11.79, a gap created on Monday. Support was noted toward 11.30 cents. An estimated 30,559 lots changed hands on the day. 141043 MET jan 98
