Signals given by the Indonesian government early in the day seemed to suggest the export ban on crude palm oil and its products could soon be lifted. Indonesia's Trade and Industry Minister Tunky Ariwibowo said on Tuesday his country would reduce trade barriers and slash import duties with a view to boosting exports. Traders said the statement made an early lifting of the palm oil export ban a possibility. Indonesian also said it had no plans to ban the export of coconut oil. The prices of coconut oil in Europe and the Philippines have been rising in recent days on speculation that Indonesia would follow the export ban on palm oil with a similar one on coconut oil. A rally by the Malaysian ringgit coupled with profit-taking and a further technical correction resulted in the Malaysian palm oil futures closing down the 50 ringgit limit and added to the easier feel to the European market. The Malaysian palm oil futures market will operate with a 75 ringgit limit on Wednesday. The managing director of the IMF, Michel Camdessus, was due in Jakarta on Wednesday and the Indonesian government planned an announcement on Thursday on the results of the IMF talks. "Every thing now depends on what the Indonesians have to say on Thursday, it's crunch day for this market," said one trader. At the close of business crude palm oil cif Europe was $25 to $17.50 a tonne down after Apr/Jun traded at $570 a tonne cif. RRD palm oil was $15 to $12.50 lower while olein lost a similar amount with no further business reported in the products sector. In a tradeless lauric oil sector coconut oil closed $25 down while palmkernel oil was $20 a tonne lower. Higher Chicago soy oil futures snuffed out any emerging business on the soft oil market which closed with soy oil 0.50 to one guilder up after Jan traded at 127 guilders in a switch with Mar at 125.50 guilders. Rape oil closed unchanged to 0.25 guilders down after Jan traded at 128 and Feb/Apr at 127.25 and 127.50 guilders a 100 kilos fob ex-mill.
