European traders remained convinced that sooner or later Indonesia will impose a ban on the export of coconut oil to protect the local cooking oil market against prices increases. "It would make more sense to ban the export of coconut oil because local consumers prefer the taste of it to cook in," said one trader. Prices surged early in the day on rumours that Indonesia had banned the export of coconut oil for January and February. However, sources in Jakarta said no ban had been announced. "They would be better off keeping their coconut oil for the local market and letting exporters ship palm olein which will bring in dollars," said another trader. Some traders said it would make little difference to the market if Indonesia banned the export of coconut oil as most of the oil comes from the Philippines. However, others did not agree. "That may have been the case five years ago, but a lot of oil now comes from Indonesian," said one trader. At the close of business coconut oil sellers were $25 to $10 up with no further business reported. Palmkernel oil sellers were quoting Feb/Mar at $630 a tonne, $42.50 above the price level before the export ban and Mar/Apr at $635, $37.50 higher. The palm oil market was quiet but remains nervous, affected by the currency turmoil in Asia and the Indonesian export ban. "Most people are glad this week is over and right now they don't even want to think about what may happen next week," said one trader. Crude palm oil sellers $10 to $15 higher in a tradeless market while products were $5 up to $2.50 down with no further business reported. Soft oils were lower in sympathy with easier dollar. Dutch soy oil sellers were 0.50 to 1.50 guilders down after Jan traded at 127.50 guilders in a switch with May/Jul at 118 guilders. Rape oil was unchanged to one guilders lower after May/Jul traded at 122 guilders and Aug/Oct at 114.50 guilders per 100 kilos fob ex-mill.
