Bellwether March futures rose 0.04 cent a lb to close at 11.86 cents, after trading between 11.77 and 11.89 cents. Second-position May rose 0.01 cent to 11.64, while the back months finished between 0.04 and 0.12 higher. Speculators sought to drive the market lower early in the day, but trade buying prevented a sharp breakdown, dealers said. Prices hovered at marginally firmer levels for the remainder of the day, with short-covering by locals helping to tip the balance on the plus side by the close. "The funds are liquidating again as we start to break into new rent lows," one trader noted. "But after you hit a low of 11.77 in March the market started to trip back up on trade buying and fund buy-backs." Trading volume was heavy throughout the day, reaching an estimated 37,911 lots by the close. The recent decline in prices has spurred some renewed interest in the physical market, dealers said, but so far offtake quantities have not been large enough to spark a broad rebound. Concern over the financial crisis in Asia has helped to reinforce the weaker tone, dealers said. Technically, the March contract would need to clear the 11.95 cent area, followed by 12.02 cents, to see a return of substantial speculative buying interest, dealers said. To the downside, was seen at 11.70 in March. 091210 MET jan 98
