"Coffee prices were up Monday, down Tuesday and did not really get anyplace today," Smith Barney analyst Walter Spilka said. "Right now it looks like coffee prices might just continue to chop sideways, with the fundamentals mixed," Spilka added. "On the one hand, CSCE stocks have begun to slip again, and dry weather in Colombia may be affecting the crop there, but the crop is still likely to be bigger than last year's small crop, and down the road is the threat of a big Brazil crop," he said. CSCE March coffee ended up 0.70 cent at 162.70 cents a pound, after trading a 159.00-164.25 cent range, inside Tuesday's range, but the March/May backwardation slumped to 3.25 cents from 4.90 cents Tuesday. CSCE coffee volume totalled 6,408 lots. US certified coffee stocks fell 1,537 bags to 96,451 bags on January 5, but were unchanged on January 6, according to data published after the market closed. Colombia is the largest producer of washed arabica coffee and last season produced 10.8 million bags, a decline of 16 percent from the previous season, according to industry statistician F.O. Licht. But late last year the Colombian National Coffee Federation reported it had lowered its estimate of the 1997/98 crop by 500,000 bags to 12 million due to El Nino weather damage. "We don't believe the Colombian weather impact has been fully discounted yet," one Florida based broker with Latin American clients said. "We think there could be 30 percent less coffee from Colombia this year and the Mexican crop could be smaller too. The main reason why many people are still bearish is that many funds are still long and there are alleged to be big stop orders around 157 cents basis March, below last week's lows, which if hit could cause prices to cascade lower temporarily," he said. 081150 MET jan 98
