Bellwether March futures rose $27 a tonne to close at $1,614, ending toward the top of the day's $1,581-1,616 trading range. May futures rose $25, ending at $1,646. Buying interest returned to the market today, as Tuesday's settlement above key support levels attracted interest from both speculators and the trade. With little opposition from producer countries at the highs, the market was able move back above the $1,600 level in the March contract. "You found some follow-through buying from trade and industry sources, and the weak dollar discourage any arbitrage pressure," said one broker. "It got oversold in the last few days so we were looking for a correction to the upside." Dealers said further upside progress would hinge on the market's ability to close a recent chart gap at $1,615-1,629 in March. Otherwise, major processing countries in Europe were due to publish fourth-quarter grindings data over the next few days, but dealers said the numbers were unlikely to have a major impact on prices.
