Traders said the market was working under half day FOSFA rules and trading finished at 1130 gmt. The market is officially open after the New Year Day's holiday on Friday January 2, 1998 but traders said business is unlikely to return to normal until Monday January 5, 1998. "Companies will have reduced staffing on Friday and even if the market does get going it is unlikely that anyone will be around after lunch," said one trader. Only the soft oil sector was fully quoted with soy oil 0.50 guilders up and rape oil one guilder higher to one guilder lower. Crude palm oil was unchanged to $5 up with Apr/Jun the first offered position. The products market was at a standstill owing to the New Year holiday in Malaysia.
