Bosnian Serb wartime police commander indicted for war crimes

SARAJEVO, Dec 28 (Hina) - The Bosnian Prosecutor's Office on Friday indicted Vitomir Popic, former police commander in Gacko, eastern Herzegovina, for war crimes against Bosniak civilians.

The 61-year-old was born in Bosnia and Herzegovina but now lives in Novi Sad, Serbia. He has Serbian citizenship and is unavailable to the Bosnian judiciary.

He is accused of participating in a joint criminal enterprise with Bosnian Serb military commanders aimed at driving out Bosniaks from Gacko municipality. He is charged with inhumane acts, murder, deportation, forced relocation, torture, and the establishment of a camp where Bosniak civilians were unlawfully imprisoned, tortured and killed.

The indictment has to be upheld by the State Court, after which it will be possible to issue an international arrest warrant.
