We have always made it clear that BiH's path to the EU is the path of partnership and it is high time that BiH takes the responsibility for the decisive step towards the EU by making European integration a national priority, Sorensen said in a statement.
There is an urgent need for BiH's political elite to take the responsibility for BiH's next step towards the EU, and BiH must implement the Stabilisation and Association Agreement if it wants to submit a credible request for membership, he said.
He said the BiH authorities, in line with the road map signed with the EU, had committed to implementing the Sejdic-Finci ruling with the aim of aligning BiH's Constitution with the European Convention of Human Rights and to creating coordination mechanisms that will allow BiH to talk with one voice about European issues.
Sorensen said that this year Croatia, Montenegro, and Serbia had made "significant progress" towards EU membership, whereas BiH had made virtually none.
He recalled that the EU invested EUR 3 billon in BiH over the last 20 years and that it continued to believe in BiH's European prospects.
BiH's place is in the EU and we are similar in that both the EU and BiH are ethnically, culturally, historically and religiously diverse, and the only logical thing for BiH is to become a part of the EU, Sorensen said, adding that this was what both BiH citizens and the EU wanted.
