Serbia's opposition disinclined to support platform for Kosovo

BELGRADE, Dec 21 (Hina) - Serbian President Tomislav Nikolic on Thursday presented a platform for negotiations with Pristina to the leaders of the opposition parties, saying Kosovo "is a historic issue on which the broadest consensus possible should be reached."

Nikolic said the platform was based on the preservation of Serbia's territorial integrity and the Serb people living in Kosovo and Metohija.

Prime Minister Ivica Dacic said the "platform isn't the Bible" and that negotiations were under way to help find the best solution for Kosovo.

Democratic Party leader Dragan Djilas described the platform as "populist" and "unrealistic", saying it envisaged discontinuing the technical dialogue with the European Union, which he said would only further distance Serbia from European integration.

Democratic Party of Serbia leader Vojislav Kostunica said the platform "remains unclear as to whether the autonomy of Serbs will be within Kosovo as a Serbian province or an independent state."

Liberal Democratic Party leader Cedomir Jovanovic said Finnish diplomat Martti Ahtisaari's plan was the best solution for Kosovo Serbs and that the recognition of Kosovo's independence should be left for the future.

In the platform, Belgrade offers creating an autonomous union of Serb municipalities in north Kosovo and other municipalities with a Serb majority. It refers to the Kosovo authorities as temporary self-government institutions in Pristina and to Kosovo as the Autonomous Province of Kosovo and Metohija, which is how Kosovo is defined in the Serbian constitution, whereby Serbia persists in its position that it will never recognise Kosovo's independence.
