Parliament debates amendments to anti-corruption office law

ZAGREB, Nov 30 (Hina) - The Croatian parliament on Friday began a debate on a government-sponsored bill of amendments to the law on the Office for the Suppression of Corruption and Organised Crimes (USKOK) which gives USKOK jurisdiction in cases of bribery involving deputies, which is a criminal offense under the new penal code.

Said crime would carry a prison sentence from six months to five years for members of the Croatian or the European Parliament as well as city, municipal or assembly councillors who seek or receive bribes to vote in a certain way.

The same punishment is envisaged for those who offer bribes to deputies or councillors to that end.

The amendments align the USKOK Act with the new penal code that goes into force on January 1.

Before the debate on the amendments, parliament discussed a proposal to ratify an agreement between the Croatian and US governments on the procurement and exchange of services and logistics support during joint exercises and operations or in emergencies.
