Serbia must respect Vojvodina, says province's PM

BELGRADE/NOVI SAD, Nov 11 (Hina) - Serbia must respect the fact that Vojvodina exists because extreme demands to abolish this province can cause another extreme demand, one for its independence, the province's Prime Minister, Bojan Pajtic, told Novi Sad's Dnevnik newspaper of Sunday.

Speaking of a campaign launched by the Dveri nationalist movement in October to abolish Vojvodina's autonomy, Pajtic said such messages and the political groups sending them had no significant influence in public but did contribute to an atmosphere of distrust in the country, which could result in stronger ideas about independence, which he said was "simply a natural response."

Pajtic said the strong economic crisis produced an extremist right wing.

He recalled European officials' assessments that as a state, Serbia has the obligation to honour its regulations and Constitution.

"Serbia must respect the fact that Vojvodina exists and that it makes up nearly one-third of Serbia's population and territory and that it makes a huge contribution to the whole country in the economic and every other sense," Pajtic said, suggesting that Serbia would have to change its Constitution before joining the European Union but that there was no political will for it at the moment.

An official of the Alliance of Vojvodina Hungarians, Sandor Egeresi, pointed to the need of amending the Constitution on Saturday.

He said the province's constitutional rights were not being honoured and that some institutions still attempted to further reduce Vojvodina's powers.

Egeresi told the press "Serbia needs a European constitution which will define the issue of Vojvodina's status within Serbia as well as the issue of the possible establishment of new regions and strengthening of local self government."

He said the Serbian public was being "frightened with some made-up Vojvodina separatism" and urged stopping the economic ruining of the province.

Egeresi said his Alliance did not support the federalisation of Serbia but advocated "a broad autonomy for Vojvodina, with legislative, executive and judicial authorities, the right to assets and direct revenue."

Launching its campaign to abolish Vojvodina's autonomy last month, the Dveri nationalist movement said this autonomy "isn't only politically bad for its citizens but economically as well because it represents an unnecessary duplication of bureaucracy and administration."
