Gov't sends agriculture act amendments into fast-track discussion

ZAGREB, Oct 11 (Hina) - The government on Thursday sent a bill to parliament for fast-track discussion on state aid to agriculture and rural development and a bill of amendments to the Agriculture Act to align Croatia's agricultural policy with the European Union's common agricultural policy and rules on the use of European agricultural funds.

This primarily refers to direct payments in agriculture which must be identical to those applied in the EU so that Croatia can draw money from the EU funds as soon as it joins the Union.

Agriculture Minister Tihomir Jakovina said that if Croatia honoured the law on state aid to agriculture, it would have nearly HRK 700 million from the EU budget in early 2014 for the previous year.

In 2015, Croatia will be able to draw nearly HRK 1.3 billion for the previous year and the funds will grow each year, he said.

The amendments to the Agriculture Act will align it with the law on state aid, enable drought-hit family farms to make additional money and, the minister said, help in suppressing the grey economy.
